New International Trailers for PROMETHEUS

As of this posting, this weekend on Collider has featured two trailers for Prometheus on this site, not to mention a live chat with Michael Fassbender and Charlize Theron, a viral campaign report, and panel coverage and an interview from WonderCon. I’ll add three international trailers to the pile with plenty of new footage. I believe these three new trailers are identical except for the language, but the UK, Italian, and Spanish versions are all after the jump if you want to vet for yourself.

Noomi Rapace, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, Charlize Theron, and Michael Fassbender star in the Alien prequel. Prometheus opens on June 8.

Let me add to the chorus that all these new trailers look very, very cool.

WonderCon 2012: BATTLESHIP Panel Recap; Alexander Skarsgard, Brooklyn Decker and Peter Berg Debut Two New Clips and Host a Q&A

Here at Wonder-Con 2011, Universal Pictures was kind enough to stop by with some new footage from their upcoming action film, Battleship. The recently released new trailer was just the tip of the iceberg as director Peter Berg came loaded with two new clips highlighting drastically different tones of the film. We got to see another side of Taylor Kitsch’s character as well as a good look at the alien menace in Battleship known as the Regents. We also got a very fine look at Brooklyn Decker and man how I’ve been waiting for that (she’s a supermodel, for God’s sake. Use her in your marketing!) Alexander Skarsgard also told a funny story about being shot in the face with a 25-foot-long air cannon. Just another day at WonderCon.

Director Peter Berg’s Battleship, starring Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson, Alexander Skarsgard, Brooklyn Decker and Rihanna opens May 18th. Hit the jump for more.

Let’s start off with the clips as they gave a pretty good indication of the level of action and humor we can except to see in this summer’s Battleship. The first one, surprisingly, highlighted the relationship between the Hopper brothers, Alex (Kitsch) and Stone (Skarsgard). They’re out at a local bar for Alex’s birthday with big brother Stone buying drinks and doling out unwanted life advice. Alex is apparently on hard times and is unemployed, while Stone is in the Navy, following in their late father’s footsteps (which is why Stone feels the need to look out for Alex).

The chemistry is pretty good here and you can tell a portion of it is improvised (Berg commented on actors’ performances on Friday Night Lights being half improvisation.) Then we get the glory shot of Samantha (Decker) walking into the bar, at which point Alex does his best to impress her. Without ruining a pretty funny scene (it resembled an outtake from The Hangover), let’s just say that Alex goes to great lengths to get the lady a microwaveable chicken burrito.

Cut to five years later: Stone is high-up in the Naval command, Alex is a trouble-maker in the Navy and is preparing to propose to Samantha, who just so happens to be the Admiral’s (Neeson) daughter. Putting the kibosh on his marriage plan is an alien race, who have dispatched five ships that were sent to Earth to answer our interstellar radio signal. The scene opens with one of the aliens laid out in the hold of the ship with the crew standing around it. Alex, now a Captain, removes the helmet from the alien, revealing a humanoid creature with sharp, bristly hairs on his chin. Then, in a scene reminiscent of the Area 51 autopsy from Independence Day, the alien springs to life. A mind-meld of sorts occurs between Alex and the alien with images of extraterrestrial warfare, just before the alien is rescued by his cohorts. Chaos ensues, as is usually the case, and Alex and the other officers scour the ship in search of an alien that remains on board.

There are some cool highlights to the alien here, which Berg calls “Thug.” They seem to have a Swiss Army knife-like appendage on their suits that can flip and rotate into a variety of tools including guns, knives and a weird scanner-type apparatus (from the footage, it looked like “Thug” was scanning one of the ship’s engines or weapons; it was difficult to tell out of context). More fighting breaks out with the alien clearly winning the upper-hand until…[SPOILER] Alex leads him up onto the deck where Raikes (Rihanna) shoots the thing point blank with a 5-inch deck gun. The build-up to that money-shot was well worth the execution. What was disappointing was Kitsch’s terrible one-liners (he actually said, “I have a bad feeling about this.”)

In between the clips, Berg, Skarsgard and Decker participated in a panel discussion. I’ve outlined their responses below:

Berg’s father was a Marine and a Naval war historian. He used to take Berg and his sister on tours of military bases were he would interrupt the tour guide and correct them on their historical inaccuracies.

Originally, Berg wanted to make a movie about the Essex, a whaling ship that sank in 1820 and stranded its crew on an island; the crew resorted to cannibalism to survive. Berg quipped that “cannibalism was not popular with the studio.” (This was the same whaling ship that inspired Herman Melville’s “Moby-Dick.”When asked, “Why Battleship?” Berg was candid with the fact that “it didn’t initially lend itself to the most logical interpretation to film,” but he found inspiration in the fact that once you’ve scored a hit in Battleship, you “try to kill your opponent as brutally as possible.”Berg commented that, although Battleship has an attractive cast, they’re “smart, complicated actors.” He especially raved about Decker and Rihanna.

Skarsgard commented on the physicality required for the action scenes in the film. He told a story about a scene in which Berg wanted to film Skarsgard’s reaction to being hit by an incoming soundwave, which resulted in Skarsgard taking a blast to the face from a 25-foot-long air cannon.Decker also talked about her action scenes saying, “I got to shoot guns. I was a happy camper.” She said that Berg makes everything feel very real, mentioning a time when the director hid in a nearby bush with a machine-gun during a shot in which she stumbles onto a terrifying scene of carnage.The aliens, known as Regents, come from what is known as a Goldilocks planet (neither too hot, nor too cold and having similar conditions to Earth); they were designed by ILM.Berg says that Battleship may not be the biggest movie of the summer, but they have the biggest guns.

After viewing the footage, there looks to be a lot more humor and heart invested in the characters than I would have guessed at first blush. While the setup scene came off a bit goofy, it did round out the characters a bit more. Battleship still looks like, as Berg called it, “a fun, kick-ass, intense, emotional-at-times, summer popcorn madness” movie. With this summer being as over-loaded with action movies as it is, Battleship might end up sinking below the rest.

Alex Hopper, a Naval officer assigned to the USS John Paul Jones; Brooklyn Decker as Sam Shane, a physical therapist and Hopper’s fiancée; Alexander Skarsgård as Hopper’s older brother, Stone, Commanding Officer of the USS Sampson; Rihanna as Petty Officer Raikes, Hopper’s crewmate and a weapons specialist on the USS John Paul Jones; and international superstar Liam Neeson as Hopper and Stone’s superior (and Sam’s father), Admiral Shane.
Berg directs this epic action-adventure also produced by Scott Stuber (Couples Retreat), Sarah Aubrey (The Kingdom), Brian Goldner and Bennett Schneir of Hasbro (the Transformers franchise), along with Duncan Henderson (Master and Commander) and Jeffrey Silver (300). The film is written by Jon Hoeber & Erich Hoeber (Red).

TOP 5: 21 JUMP STREET, THE AVENGERS, CASA DE MI PADRE, DARK SHADOWS Trailer, SXSW 2012 Coverage

From here on out, when I see a movie and can’t quit thinking about it one week after my initial viewing I’m going to refer to it as the Martha Marcy May Marlene effect. I was uncertain how I felt about it while watching. Flash-forward one week later and I’m still uncertain. Combine some great performances from Elizabeth Olsen and John Hawkes, reserved but effective cinematography, sparse dialogue and even fewer musical cues and what I got was one of the most paranoia-filled movie experiences I’ve ever had. While that may sound like a backhanded compliment, if writer/director Sean Durkin was trying to evoke the type of emotions I think he was with Martha, it may be the highest compliment I can pay him.

1. 21 JUMP STREET Interviews with Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, Ice Cube and More

To be honest, I’m past the point of needing to be convinced to watch 21 Jump Street. While I’m in the Windy City this weekend for some St. Patty’s festivities, numero uno on the list for next weekend’s plans is catching this pic in my local theater. No if’s, and’s, or but’s. If you’re still on the fence about paying to see it yourself, this finger-blasting PSA should remove all doubt. If more convincing is what you require, check out these video interviews with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, Rob Riggle, co-directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, and the one and only Ice Cube.

2. Joss Whedon Talks THE AVENGERS & THE AVENGERS 2

When Joss Whedon premiered he and director Drew Goddard’s The Cabin in the Woods at SXSW 2012 people were excited. When he used some of that time to discuss The Avengers and The Avengers 2 people became more excited. In short, excitement abounds at SXSW 2012 (something we’ll discuss more below in #5). If Whedon discussing things like current Avengers runtime, Easter eggs, DVD extras, etc. isn’t enough, this week also brought us a considerable amount of new footage via this Japanese trailer.

3. CASA DE MI PADRE Interviews Will Ferrell, Nick Offerman and More

I remain skeptical about Will Ferrell’s Casa de mi Padre. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy Ferrell’s considerable talents as much as the next 25 year-old who doesn’t dislike him just for the sake of being difficult. That said, I’m weary that Ferrell’s over-the-top nature may be turned up to 12 in Padre (which is about two notches above my over-the-top comfort level). All of this in mind, I encourage you to check out Matt’s review and all of our video interviews with Ferrell, Nick Offerman, Diego Luna, and the lovely Genesis Rodriguez in the spirit of developing your own Padre expectations.

4. First Trailer and Poster for DARK SHADOWS

I’m going to rely on our readers for this one because my knowledge of the ABC’s original Dark Shadows soap opera is ultra-limited. Am I supposed to think that Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows adaptation is the lovechild of The Addams Family and Sweeney Todd? Because the film’s first poster and trailer makes me think exactly that. I hope that I turn out to be very wrong, but for right now Tim Burton/Johnny Depp fatigue has set in. Yawn.

5. SXSW 2012 Coverage

In all honesty, my time with Collider has allowed me to take part in some very cool events and I’m thankful for that. And that’s about where my perspective ends and my envy of Matt and Scott for being in Austin at SXSW begins. Five minutes from the upcoming sci-fi actioner film Lockout have gone online. The footage is the same clip that was shown earlier today at WonderCon, and highlights a scene involving Guy Pearce‘s character breaking into a space prison. Pearce plays a wrongly-accused spy who must rescue the President’s daughter (Maggie Grace) from the orbiting prison. Produced by Luc Besson, the film looks like a sufficiently fun thriller buoyed by Pearce’s wise-cracking lead character. Though the domestic trailers are all action, the international trailers highlight the charisma of Pearce and the fun rapport he has with Grace’s character. This clip shows more of Pearce’s appealing work, which leads me to believe that Lockout is much more than space explosions.

5 Clips from AMERICAN REUNION

With writer-directors Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg‘s American Reunion opening in a few weeks, Universal has just released five clips. In the sequel, the original gang return to East Great Falls for their high-school reunion and as the synopsis says, “In one long-overdue weekend, they will discover what has changed, who hasn’t and that time and distance can’t break the bonds of friendship.” I’m a big fan of the first film and looking forward to seeing Jim, Oz, Finch, Kevin, Stifler and of course Stifler’s mom again.

American Reunion stars Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Alyson Hannigan, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nichols, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Tara Reid, Mena Suvari, Eugene Levy, Jennifer Coolidge, Katrina Bowden, Dania Ramirez and Shannon Elizabeth. Hit the jump to watch the clips.

In the comedy American Reunion, all the American Pie characters we met a little more than a decade ago are returning to East Great Falls for their high-school reunion. Friday Box Office – 21 JUMP STREET Shoots to the Head of the Class

21 Jump Street is off to a very promising start – commercially and critically. Earning an estimated $13.1 million on Friday from 3,121 locations, the big screen adaptation of the former Fox TV series has also put up one of the most impressive Rotten Tomatoes scores of 2012 at 87% fresh. As the only wide release of the weekend, box office watchers were pretty sure that the R-rated comedy was headed for number one, especially considering it stars two of the most popular young actors of this moment – Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. With John Carter continuing to disappoint (off 60% from its less-than-stellar debut last weekend), the only challenge for Jump Street was conquering family-friendly holdover The Lorax. 21 Jump Street is now projected to take in $35 million this weekend; little wonder that a sequel is already in the works. We’ll have details and analysis tomorrow.

Gerard Butler to Topline White House Action Film OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN

If you’re a fan of the high concept action films of yesteryear (ie. the 1990s) like Con Air and Air Force One, this story may be of particular interest to you. Variety reports that Gerard Butler has signed on to star in the actioner Olympus Has Fallen. The story is described as Die Hard in the White House and centers on a “down-on-his-luck ex-Secret Service agent who becomes America’s only hope when 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. is taken over by terrorists.” Despite the absurdity of the premise, I think this sounds like a sufficiently fun action pic. In a sea of gritty/realistic/gimmicky action movies, an over-the-top story fronted by a hardened lead is actually kind of refreshing.

The script was written by first-timers Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt, but no director has signed on just yet. Hopefully they get someone who doesn’t take the film too seriously, and decides to have some fun with it. Butler will be seen later this year in the surfer film Of Men and Mavericks and the romantic comedy Playing the Field. He recently replaced Eric Bana in the diamond heist pic Brilliant, which begins shooting this spring.
